Prawdziwa opowieść o więźniach, którzy zajęli się ogrodnictwem. Colin Briggs (Clive Owen) trafia do "otwartego" więzienia. Skazańcy mogą w nim wychodzić na spacery i podejmować pracę. Nieśmiały Colin nie jest tym zachwycony. Większość życia spędził za kratami, skazany za zamordowanie brata. Fergus Wilks (David Kelly), jego kompan z celi, próbuje go pocieszyć. Daje mu prezent - paczkę nasion. Colin i jego kolega zaczynają hodować roślinki w więziennym ogródku. Wkrótce zajmuje się nimi Georginia Woodhouse (Helen Mirren). Zachęcani przez nią, biorą udział w prestiżowym konkursie Hampton Court Palace Flower Show.

But after being transferred to an open prison in the heart of the Cotswolds and meeting one of the 'lifers' - Fergus - existence takes on a whole new meaning. With his eccentric passion for gardening, the ageing Fergus is the last man Colin would normally team up with. But when he plants some seeds for Fergus - and they grow and blossom - Colin is strangely drawn to the garden. Soon, the inmates are hooked on horticulture, impressing both the Prison Governor and the colourful gardening author, Georgina Woodhouse, who urges the Royal Horticulture Society to sponsor a prisoners' show-garden. Yet Colin finds that he is hooked on more than just roses and violets. In fact, it's a certain Primrose who now consumes his thoughts... Georgina's beautiful and elusive daughter.
